Report: Nigeria on cusp of 'demographic disaster'

LAGOS, Nigeria — Nigeria teeters on the edge of a "demographic disaster" unless its stagnant economy rapidly expands to support its teeming youth population, according to a report released Wednesday. Estimates in the report by the British Council show Nigeria's population of 150 million people will swell by another 63 million people by 2050, making it the fifth most populous countries in the world. Nigeria will have a ready supply of workers into the future with more than 40 percent of the West African nation's younger than 14. However, the oil-rich nation's gross domestic product remained flat as its population multiplied in the last two decades, leaving it dangerously out of balance unless true economic development takes hold, the report said. Late workers 'locked out' in Nigeria

Nigeria's government locked out hundreds of workers who showed up late in the as part of efforts to instill discipline among notoriously nonchalant civil servants. Doors were locked at 8:30 am - the official, if widely ignored, start time for federal government workers - so managers could make a list of those who failed to turn up on time, said Tope Ajakaiye, a civil service spokesman. "It is a continuous measure in an attempt to bring sanity back to the civil service," Ajakaiye told AFP, adding two other lockouts occurred earlier this month. Doors reopened around 10:00 am. Court Sets N500 Million Record Bail For Akingbola

A Federal High Court in Lagos has set a record N500 million bail for disgraced banker and former boss of Intercontinental Bank of Nigeria, Erastus Akingbola over charges of fraud. The bail amount is the highest for other bankers charged with similar offences by Nigeria’s anti financial crimes agency, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Akingbola was fired by Nigeria’s apex bank, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) last year along with four other bank chief executives for mismanging their banks and other fraudulent activities. "I think the bail condition is fair having regards to the facts of the case," Rickey Tarfa, a lawyer for Akingbola told reporters outside the Federal High Court in Ikoyi. Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan announced a plan to dissolve the state power monopoly and expand electricity generation through private investment. ABUJA, Nigeria — Nigerian police say kidnappers seized a man who claims be to the son of the nation's first prime minister. Police spokesman Moshood Jimoh told The Associated Press on Sunday that kidnappers seized Dr. Jhalil Tafawa Balewa. Jimoh said police shot one kidnapper and arrested another. The spokesman declined to say whether Tafawa Balewa was freed after the firefight. A three-year investigation by the United Nations will almost entirely exonerate Royal Dutch Shell for 40 years of oil pollution in the Niger delta, causing outrage among communities who have long campaigned to force the multinational to clean up its spills and pay compensation. The $10m (£6.5m) investigation by the UN environment programme (UNEP), paid for by Shell, will say that only 10% of oil pollution in Ogoniland has been caused by equipment failures and company negligence, and concludes that the rest has come from local people illegally stealing oil and sabotaging company pipelines.
