Mass burials held in rural Nigeria

mass_burialThe Nigerian Red Cross has reported that mass burials have been held in rural villages today Northern Nigeria. This follows post-election violence where mostly Northern Muslims in some areas insist that the vote was rigged.

Armed supporters of former military ruler and main opposition candidate Muhammadu Buhari went through the streets chanting his name. More than 40 000 people have been displaced in the North.

President Goodluck Johnathan, who was last week declared president, warned the perpetrators of violence that the persistent attacks would be detrimental to Nigeria’s economy.

Subsequent gubernatorial elections have been delayed due to the violence. “These acts of mayhem are sad reminders of the events which plunged our country into 30 months of an unfortunate civil war,” Johnathan said, referring to unrest in the country in the 60s.  Muslims in Christian areas fearing retaliation have fled to neighbouring countries and military barracks for safety.
